We’ve moved! August 24, 2009

After a year of nothingness we have moved into the country and love it.  From now on there will just be stories of sheep, cows, macadamias and hard work…

After much reflection I have decided that winter is not just about the weather, but about the way that people treat each other, how our relationships are affected and the fact that not being able to go outside to play due to torrential rain can send children parents into temporary insanity.

This week illness has meant that a relatively normal week has been turned upside down and inside out, not by me being ill, but everyone around me. Colds, flu, vomiting and the runs are responsible for more time off work for employees than any other complaints, and all are viruses. Z4, who is determined to be a doctor, has decided that she has to figure out a way to stop these pests; without us all having to sanitise everything and everyone around us. Shouldn’t we as the human race have evolved past getting the common cold, we all know there is nothing common about it.

Enough of my complaining.

I love my children a little more each day, if that is possible, and love the simplicity of life they bring our adult complicatedness (is there such a word?).

I wish for all the world in the depths of winter at the moment that they have health, wealth, happiness and maybe a little sunshine….

Hair colour May 8, 2008

I am used to having people recognise and think I am someone else, usually at least once a week. Apparently all ginga’s are the same person! Anyway, I decided to dye my hair last week, it is a BIG change. So much so that the people who I work with all day and have done for 6 years now didn’t recognise me! I changed the colour in the time between work and going out at night to a client function, needless to say the clients took a while to recognise me as well.

I have been aware most of my life that I get recognised because I have red hair, apparently only 2% of the population have naturally red hair. But I had no idea the impact it would have on people being able to recognise me in a crowd, which got me thinking, maybe it is like the movies, dye your hair black after being blond and you can escape the police whenever you want… Not that I NEED to escape them I hope you realise.

I digress, I am going for a mid-30’s overhaul! I have just bought pencil skirts for work (not as short as I used to wear them 15 years ago of course) and revamped my wardrobe, i.e. got rid of the preggie clothes.

I have a friend turning 30 this month, I remember that, being 7 months pregnant, feeling as big as a house, and spending lots of money because I was so depressed that I was turning 30, couldn’t celebrate in my usual fashion and also was as big as a house (if I hadn’t mentioned that already). Good on her for having kids earlier and being able to enjoy a whole weekend of self indulgent bliss, which I of course will be taking part in. I love my foot spa, just thinking about it makes me want to stop writing. So a weekend of no kids, no husband and all the time to paint nails, do hair, relax, sounds amazing. thebean, if you are reading this, I can’t wait!!

Good night all, the foot spa is calling and I can think of nothing else.

PS Here is a shot of my new hair colour so you can recognise me!

What is it with 2 year olds! May 8, 2008

Ok so I have become accustomed to the early morning wake up calls, but seriously 4.30am is just TOO early. This morning J2 decided to wake up and try to get mum UP at this ridiculous time. After managing to get him into our bed and somewhat still (as much as 2 year olds are ever still) I proceeded to keep resting, there was no chance of going back to sleep. This boy was pulling my hair, emptying my tissue box and generally doing anything he could by 5.30 to get me up. AGHHHHH

And yet, he still only slept for 1.5 hours during the day and went to bed at 7pm as usual, and most of his lunch in his lunch box today came home uneaten. What is it with 2 year olds! He doesn’t speak well enough to be able to tell me why he was being such a brat, but I have told him he has to stay in his bed tonight until mum comes in to get him out of bed, fat chance I know but it is worth a try.

Z4 on the other hand took her first school bus trip home today alone (without mum) with all ages, from 4 to 17. I am so proud of her, but also feeling guilty that I won’t be able to do the “mum” thing of picking her up, she is only 4!! She informs me though that she enjoyed it and made friends with a boy who is 5 and had to sit up the front by the driver like she had to. She will need to do this four days a week until school next year so I hope she is still enjoying it by then.

I, on the other hand, panicked most of the day that she would freak, which of course she didn’t. I won’t bore you with the details of everything I did to ensure she could ring mummy at ANY time, but she was fine. I can breathe again.

I was late to work this morning (I know, you’re thinking how can she be late after getting up so early) but the problem is that I GO SLOW if woken too early. So I dropped the kids at the carers’ and went back home for a cup of tea and choccy biscuit, then went and did a bit of remedial shopping (exchanging kids clothes that didn’t fit) and went a got a coffee for myself and my administrator who was wondering where on earth I had got to! She loved the coffee…

Taking a shower is not a peaceful experience, I can be guaranteed in our house that if I decide to take a shower without D looking after the kids they will a) hurt themselves b)hurt each other c)break something or d) climb somewhere inappropriate (i.e. half way out a window that has a 2 metre drop). So, taking action tonight I took a shower, leaving D to bath the kids (believe me this is not normal behaviour for him). All went well, until they were to go to bed. BOTH of them wanted me to put them to bed, just not happening. After much negotiation they were both in bed and D went back to work. Oh the peace….

I love the night, because it the only time I can guarantee peace (almost 100%) to be able to write, study, clean, watch the box or just have a whole cup of tea in one sitting without taking it to the microwave once.

I love night time! Long live the night…

Here is an updated picture of the darling, almost hairless, but that is another story entirely.

Guess what my son can say Panda! I know this sounds wierd to you non parents but right after that he said giraffe… No stopping him now, next he will be telling me where to go with a not-so-cute look on his face! Only a week to go and he will be 2. I cannot believe it!

Also proud of my o-so-fearful daughter who finally managed to go under the water at swimming classes without screaming blue murder, she actually liked it!

Fading memories… March 4, 2008

Remember the days when you slept in till you woke up, dinner could be made when you were ready, your husband thought of you for sex and not as ‘mummy’.

As for the kids, I have photos of them both blobbed on the same beanbag eating iceblocks and enjoying the sunshine… They still fight, but they seem to be happier when together instead of apart. YIPPEE, I wonder how long this will last.

Also on the upside I went shopping on the weekend and bought the most amazing vacuum cleaner. Now don’t get me wrong I would have much preferred to buy a TV or furniture, but it had to be done. I was astounded about the amount of stuff it picked up out of the carpet, actually it was quite disgusting. I went over the sunroom/playroom once and had to emtpy it and try again!!! The lounge and rest of the house wasn’t much better. In total I think I emptied it 3 times, and has been put away half full. I have to say though without trying to sound too much like an advertisement that the Dyson bagless is the only option I found that doesn’t have issues with LONG human hair; and believe me it picked up heaps of it. It even kept picking up when it looked REALLY full. Sad what I get excited about these days! But I do like a clean house.

Must go and clean up after dinner stuff etc. Also must finish the ironing (did most of it this morning so I actually had something to wear to work). Also need to swap the washing over from airer to hotwater cupboard, when will this rain stop!

No spaghetti in sight… February 18, 2008

The Bean Bag, I salute you! I have to say that I have NEVER had trouble with my kids getting food stuck up their noses!! Now that may seem like I am being a snob, but really I am jealous. Let me explain, the kids wake you up in the middle of the night for the 300th night in a row, what is more worth getting up for:

“I can’t sleep, I need a drink” or

“the spaghetti came out when I went snooort”

I am finally going to figure out how to load up a photo, because although my kids haven’t as yet got food stuck up their noses, they certainly know how to make noise, and I have proof, they grabbed every musical (or non musical) instrument they could and proceeded to “entertain” me for the next half hour…

musical instruments

WOW I got a photo in, yay me!

The noise children create is totally underestimated by the non-parents, I had one of them tell me yesterday that 2 is such a cute age, he obviously doesn’t have one that is infuriatingly only got painted on ears and isn’t even 2 yet!

Toilet training is fun, J1 has decided that he will never do number 2’s in the potty or toilet,  instead he hides, does it in his undies and then runs around quite happily with saggy pants! No matter how much we try to entertain him on the toilet with toys, books etc he will NEVER stay long enough.  Anyone got any tips on the whole number 2 thing?  Z4 did number 2s first in potty and preferred to number 1 soaked knickers, you just can’t win! They couldn’t be more opposite…

Toilet training tips aside, I took time away from work today to have a lovely morning tea at the local Palmers store, how great to  go to a cafe and get a massage all in the same day.

Sleep, that little luxury… February 15, 2008

I spent all day Thursday in bed with a major headache, and slept all day!  and then all night…  I must have been sick because mum agreed to have the kids for the night, then Friday night too!  I was at work on Friday but was in bed asleep by 7.30pm and slept all night.  Isn’t it amazing that before kids you take sleep for granted, because you can.  Since kids I have realised that there a lot of parents wandering through life completely sleep deprived, how do we all survive?  Routine and repetition!!!  Routine is not only good for kids, but we parents NEED routine to keep functioning.

Enough prattling from me, it time for me to finally go and pick up the kids and leave my childless heaven of peace and quiet to go back to reality.  To all of you who cope without wonderful support systems that come and take away the sleepless mites I salute you…
